What Is THCP? The Cannabinoid Up to 30× Stronger Than THC, Explained

Mithilesh mithilesh.dangare@gmail.com

Quick answer: THCP (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp that binds to your body's CB1 receptors with roughly 30 times greater affinity than Delta-9 THC. It doesn't get you "30 times higher," but that binding strength makes it dramatically more potent by weight - which is why even a few milligrams of THCP in a gummy, vape, or joint enhancer produces a noticeably more intense and longer-lasting experience than traditional THC. Discovered by Italian researchers in 2019, THCP is the reason the newest generation of hemp products hits harder than anything the market had before.

What Is THCP?

THCP, short for Tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is a phytocannabinoid - a cannabinoid produced naturally by the cannabis plant, though only in trace amounts. It was first identified in 2019 by a team of Italian scientists who were analyzing a cannabis strain and found a molecule that had never been formally catalogued before.

Structurally, THCP is a close cousin of Delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid most people mean when they say "THC." The difference comes down to one part of the molecule: its alkyl side chain. Delta-9 THC has a five-carbon side chain. THCP has a seven-carbon side chain - and that seemingly small change is what makes it so much more powerful.

Why the Side Chain Makes THCP So Potent

Cannabinoids produce their effects by binding to receptors in your endocannabinoid system - primarily the CB1 receptors concentrated in the brain and nervous system. How strongly a cannabinoid latches onto those receptors is called its binding affinity, and binding affinity is a major driver of potency.

The length of a cannabinoid's alkyl side chain has a big influence on how well it fits into the CB1 receptor. Research has generally found that a chain of at least three carbons is needed for a cannabinoid to bind at all, and that binding strength increases as the chain lengthens toward an optimal length of around eight carbons.

Delta-9 THC's five-carbon chain binds well - well enough to be famously psychoactive. THCP's seven-carbon chain binds far more efficiently. The 2019 study that identified THCP measured its CB1 binding affinity at roughly 33 times that of Delta-9 THC in laboratory testing.

Important nuance: binding affinity is not the same as "how high you get." A 30× stronger binding affinity does not mean THCP is 30 times more intoxicating. In practice, most estimates put THCP's real-world potency at somewhere around 5 to 10 times that of Delta-9 THC by weight. That's still a massive jump - it just isn't a linear one. This is exactly why product formulas use THCP in small milligram amounts: 5mg of THCP in a gummy is doing serious work.

What Does THCP Feel Like?

Users consistently describe the THCP experience as:

  • More intense than equivalent Delta-8, Delta-9, or HHC - a stronger, heavier, more pronounced high

  • Longer-lasting - the exceptional receptor binding means effects tend to sustain well beyond what the same milligrams of other cannabinoids would deliver

  • Deeply relaxing at higher doses, often with strong body effects

  • Potentially overwhelming if overdone - which is why THCP is almost always blended with smoother cannabinoids rather than used alone

Because of that intensity, responsible products pair THCP with cannabinoids that round out and modulate the experience - HHC or CBD for smoothness and balance, Delta-8 for a functional body base, Delta-9 for familiar euphoria. THCP is the amplifier in a blend, not usually the whole show.

Is THCP Legal?

THCP occupies the same legal space as other hemp-derived cannabinoids. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp and hemp-derived compounds are federally legal in the United States as long as the finished product contains no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. THCP derived from hemp and sold within that threshold is federally compliant.

However - and this matters - individual states regulate cannabinoids differently. Some states have restricted or banned THCP specifically, or restricted the broader category of hemp-derived intoxicating cannabinoids. Always verify your own state's current rules before purchasing, and buy only from retailers who ship compliantly and won't sell into states where a product is prohibited.

How Is THCP Different From Other Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoid

Relative Potency vs Delta-9

Typical Role

THCP

~5–10× stronger (by weight)

The amplifier - intensity + duration

Delta-9 THC

Baseline (1×)

Classic, familiar psychoactive euphoria

Delta-8 THC

~0.5–0.75× (milder)

Smooth, clear-headed, functional body base

HHC

~0.7–0.8×

Stable, smooth euphoria; long shelf life

CBN

Mildly psychoactive

Sedation; sleep support

CBD

Non-intoxicating

Balance; reduces anxiety/overwhelm

This is why modern multi-cannabinoid products exist: each compound contributes something different, and blending them produces a fuller, more controllable entourage effect than any single cannabinoid at the same total dose.

How to Try THCP Safely

If you're new to THCP, the single most important rule is start low and go slow - because THCP's potency and delayed feedback make it easy to overshoot.

  1. Start with a fraction of a normal dose. If a product suggests one gummy, start with a quarter. THCP amplifies everything.

  2. Wait the full onset window. Edibles can take 60–90 minutes; don't redose because you "don't feel it yet."

  3. Respect the duration. THCP effects last longer - plan for a session that runs well beyond a typical Delta-9 experience.

  4. Don't drive or operate machinery, and don't combine with alcohol.

  5. Buy lab-tested products with third-party Certificates of Analysis, so you know exactly how much THCP you're actually getting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is THCP stronger than THC?

Yes. THCP binds to CB1 receptors about 30 times more strongly than Delta-9 THC, which translates to an estimated 5–10× greater real-world potency by weight. It is one of the most potent cannabinoids currently used in hemp products.

Is THCP natural or synthetic?

THCP occurs naturally in cannabis, but only in trace amounts. Because those natural quantities are so small, the THCP used in most commercial products is produced from hemp-derived CBD through conversion - making it hemp-derived and Farm Bill-eligible when kept under the 0.3% Delta-9 threshold.

Will THCP get me high?

Yes - significantly. THCP is strongly psychoactive. This is not a CBD-style, non-intoxicating cannabinoid; it produces an intense, long-lasting high and should be dosed conservatively.

How much THCP is a lot?

Because it's so potent, product formulas typically use single-digit milligrams of THCP per serving (for example, 5mg in a gummy). Even those small amounts meaningfully amplify a blend. There's no universal number - start with a fraction of any product's suggested serving.

Does THCP show up on a drug test?

Very likely, yes. THCP is a THC analog and can produce the THC metabolites that standard drug tests screen for. If you're subject to testing, avoid THCP and other intoxicating hemp cannabinoids.

Is THCP safe?

THCP is still new, and long-term research is limited. The main practical risk is its potency - taking too much can produce an uncomfortable, overwhelming experience. Used conservatively, with lab-tested products, and avoided by anyone pregnant, nursing, or on interacting medications, it carries a risk profile broadly similar to other intoxicating cannabinoids. Consult a healthcare provider if you have any medical condition.
